Purpurin Suppresses Candida albicans Biofilm Formation and Hyphal Development

A striking and clinically relevant virulence trait of the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans is its ability to grow and switch reversibly among different morphological forms. Inhibition of yeast-to-hypha transition in C. albicans represents a new paradigm for antifungal intervention. We have previously demonstrated the novel antifungal activity of purpurin against Candida fungi. In this stu...

Interaction of Candida albicans with Fluconazole/ Clotrimazole: Effect on Hyphae Formation and Expression of Hyphal Wall Protein 1

Background and Aims: Candida albicans (C. albicans) is the most common opportunistic human pathogen. Therapeutic options for Candida infections are limited to available antifungal drugs. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of fluconazole/clotrimazole (FLU/CLT) on C. albicans hyphae formation. Materials and Methods: We have established the effectiveness of the combination of FL...

Influence of Bacterial Presence on Biofilm Formation of Candida albicans

PURPOSE Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen that is commonly found in human microflora. Biofilm formation (BF) is known as a major virulence factor of C. albicans. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of bacterial presence on biofilm formation of C. albicans. MATERIALS AND METHODS The BF of Candida was investigated when it was co-cultured with C. albicans (C. albicans ...

Rsr1 focuses Cdc42 activity at hyphal tips and promotes maintenance of hyphal development in Candida albicans.

The extremely elongated morphology of fungal hyphae is dependent on the cell's ability to assemble and maintain polarized growth machinery over multiple cell cycles. The different morphologies of the fungus Candida albicans make it an excellent model organism in which to study the spatiotemporal requirements for constitutive polarized growth and the generation of different cell shapes. In C. al...

Propranolol inhibits hyphal development in Candida albicans.

Propranolol was used to investigate the role of phosphatidic acid (PA) and diacylglycerol in the dimorphic transition in Candida albicans. Propranolol was able to inhibit the appearance of germ tubes without decreasing growth rate. Data suggest that inhibition of morphogenesis may be due to binding by propranolol of PA derived from PLD1 hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine.
